Training your dog to sit

Make sure that your dog isn’t too excited before you start. Show him that you have a treat in your hand. Once your dog has mastered the sit command, you can now move onto The ‘down’ command.

When your dog sees that you have treat, he will probably automatically go into a sit position, as this has was he’s leant to do to get a treat. This will make it easier to then go into the down position. However if this doesn’t happen, your dog can just as easily learn from standing. You don’t want to have to say ‘sit’ and than ‘down’…you will eventually be able to say one or the other and your dog will know what is required of him.

Draw the treat slowly from his nose, down towards the ground; he will tilt his head down to follow the treat. Have the treat on the floor and tease it along. As his front legs start to go forward, he’ll lengthen his body to follow the treat ending up in the down position. Make sure at exactly this point you give the command “down” and give him the treat. Making sure you give him verbal and physical praise too.

Repeat this several times during each training session, he will soon begin to associate the word down with his action because that’s when he’s receiving his reward. Soon you’ll be able to just say the word and he will go into a down without the incentive of the treat. Make sure when rewarding your dog you give him lots of verbal and physical praise before the treat, that way you wont have to always use treats and your dog will come to associate your voice and touch just as rewarding as a treat.

Once he has learnt the command, practice the exercise in lots of different places, in and outside the home so he gets used to lying down anywhere.Have him lay down on your first command, if he doesn’t make sure that he does even if it means you having to put him in the position. Don’t keep saying “down” as he will just learn to ignore you.

If you have to put him in the position do not reward him, don’t get angry either. Wait a moment and repeat the exercise, he will soon realise what he has to do. Remember you’re the leader so if you ask him to lay down he has to!Remember to keep training sessions short; especially for puppies…training should be fun for both dog and owner. Always end on a high.Bandana Puppies…where tails love to wag.
